I rarely post comments in forums, mainly because I would rather spend my time writing articles and making direct comments on specific articles posted on the Associated Content website. I do however occasionally read forum posts to see what’s new, and like many other people, my curiosity gets the best of me at times, especially when I’m bored or I want to take a break. I scan the forums for the latest complaints, site changes, and I search to find out what’s going on with my fellow content producers who post in the forums at Associated Content. I also scan a particular freebie forum to find the latest and greatest freebies and special offers generously posted and shared by people who also love freebies and deals, and I make every effort to contribute whenever possible.
In almost every neighborhood resides at least one hateful or difficult neighbor, and in every forum lurks at least one difficult person. Occasionally a new person will come along who leaves especially hateful comments, but why? The following provides a few answers in an attempt to explain why some people are hateful in forums. Although an answer isn’t always apparent, this information provides possibilities to those who have been victims of forum rage.
Text Versus Speech
In all fairness, some people don’t stop to think how incredibly hateful some of their comments in forums sound before hitting send. The intonation of voice and how words and phrases are meant to sound doesn’t always come through in text, and an innocent statement can unfortunately come off sounding like something hateful when it really wasn’t meant to be hateful at all. Also, when statements in forums can be taken more than one way, some people who are sensitive tend to become defensive and automatically take those statements the worst way possible. When this happens the offending party will likely say they’re sorry once they realize something they posted was misunderstood. This is dangerous business.
They’re Having Fun
On the other hand, not all people posting comments in forums are the least bit sincere, and their postings are meant to insult and belittle other people. Some who spew out hateful comments know exactly what they’re saying as well as how their words sound, and they enjoy the chaos and reactions they generate. If you were able to speak to these same people face to face to get an idea of what they’re really like, you’d probably be shocked. In many cases they aren’t outgoing at all in person, and they’re craving attention in forums – any kind of attention. Other people who churn out hateful comments in forums are just naturally mean-spirited and for the most part unhappy with life.
We all know the Internet provides anonymity unlike any other means of communication, and forums are the perfect place to put on a bold new face. People who wouldn’t have the audacity to say what they’re thinking face to face sometimes become very arrogant and brave when posting in forums, and they have no problem textually blurting out hateful remarks. These same cowardly people wouldn’t have the nerve to say these egotistical and hateful statements in person, but they can hide behind their avatars and alter egos.
